Artist's Description

Portland, Oregon's St. Johns Bridge is northernmost bridge on the Willamette River. Construction on the steel suspension bridge began one month before the stock market crash in 1929. It was completed in less than 21 months and dedicated in June of 1931 as the main event at Portland's 23rd annual Rose Festival. The bridge was built to facilitate traffic between Portland's St. John's neighborhood and the Linnton industrial area, which was served by ferry prior to the construction of the bridge. Initially, a canteliever bridge was proposed, but the suspension design was selected in order to save construction costs. To this day, it remains Portland's tallest bridge, with two 408 foot gothic-style towers. This image is the view of the bridge from below on a stormy day at Cathedral Park, which was named for the gothic, cathedral-like design of the bridge towers.

About Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too.
