Since tending the nest and raising the chicks often falls to the female of the species in the duck world, the hens are generally more camouflaged and less flashy than their mates. Such is the case with the Northern Shoveler (Spatula clypeata), a dabbling duck recognized by it's large, spoon-like bill. Photographed at Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, California.
