Description
"Clark's Nutcracker" ©2022 Loree Johnson Photography. Clark's Nutcrackers (Nucifraga columbiana) are one of natures finest examples of symbiotic relationships. These birds use their dagger-like bill to harvest seeds from pine cones. They cache these seeds and feed on them throughout the year. The seeds they don't eat, often sprout and grow new trees, sometimes miles away from where they were harvested. Thus, the birds depend on the pine trees for sustenance, and the pine forests depend on the birds to plant their seeds. This one was photographed at Orr Lake, Siskiyou County, California.
