Artist's Description

Hedge Creek Falls is a small, but dramatic waterfall near Dunsmuir, CA. Hedge Creek plunges about thirty feet over a massive rock wall and then continues on a short journey to the Sacramento River just downstream from the falls. For most of the year, this waterfall is little more than a trickle, but after a heavy rain, as in this image, the volume of water increases dramatically. The trail that leads to the waterfall continues through the cave that is behind it, so it is one of the few waterfalls you can see from behind without getting too wet. This is an image from late afternoon when the ravine the creek flows through was all in shade. The brightness of the flowing water is contrasted by the dark rocks and blackness of the cave. The entire scene is wet due to recent heavy rains, making it feel almost tropical.

About Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too. You can connect with her on facebook. Or visit her...
