Toketee Falls is a waterfall in Douglas County, Oregon, United States, on the North Umpqua River at its confluence with the Clearwater River. It is located approximately 58 miles (93 km) east of Roseburg near Oregon Route 138. Toketee,is a Chinook word meaning "pretty" or "graceful." Carved from ancient columnar basalt, Toketee Falls drops approximately 120 feet (36 meters) in two stages. Since this waterfall is only accessible from a viewing platform at the end of a short trail, the angles to photograph it are very limited. The light, however, varies greatly during different times of the day. This image was shot in the early morning, before the sun rose up over the ridge. The soft light accentuates the rugged texture of the basalt columns on either side of the waterfall and brings out the colors of the autumn leaves.
Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too.
