It just doesn't get much more "American West" than a bald eagle perched on a barbed wire fence. This image also makes it easy to see where the term "eagle eye" originated. The Klamath Basin National Wildlife Refuge is home to the largest concentration of bald eagles south of Alaska. In January and February, the eagles come to feed on waterfowl and rodents that are abundant in the marshes and farmland. It's not uncommon to see dozens of bald eagles and hundreds of hawks in a day visiting the refuge. This regal raptor was kind enough to pose for me against a backdrop of frozen farmland before flying off in search of its next meal. The late afternoon light accentuates the marvelous texture of this bird's beautiful feathers.
Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too.
