Artist's Description
This abandoned outbuilding still stands and provides shelter to a pair of barn owls, though the human inhabitants of this ranch have long since moved on. The Shasta Valley in northern California is a broad valley with the Shasta River as it's centerpiece. Currently, the Nature Conservancy is working with ranchers in the area to restore the once prolific salmon habitat provided by the river, which is a tributary of the much larger Klamath River. The Klamath River was once the third largest salmon producing river in the Pacific Northwest. So far, the habitat restoration project has been very successful, and hopefully the simple, common sense approach will allow the salmon to return in large numbers, while still providing enough resources and land so that the ranchers can maintain their livelihood.
About Loree Johnson
Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too.
