Artist's Description

This tunnel, contructed in 1914, was once part of the historic Columbia River Gorge Highway. Oneonta Tunnel was sealed in 1948 but revealed again fifty-five years later as part of the Historic Columbia River Highway restoration project. Today, the highway bypasses the tunnel and it has been restored as part of the pedestrian access to Oneonta Gorge. UPDATE: This tunnel was burned in the Eagle Creek Fire of 2017. The tunnel now will have to be restored again.

About Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson

Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too. You can connect with her on facebook. Or visit her...
