Description
The definition of "brae" is a steep bank or hillside. Indeed, Mossbrae Falls lives up to it's name. This image is part of the steep bank and in the foreground, you can see the Sacramento River. Mossbrae is a spring-fed waterfall on the Sacramento River near Dunsmuir, CA. The water flows year round over the moss-covered hillside. The entire waterfall is approximately 150 feet wide and the highest section is approximately 50 feet high. As a result, there are many streams of water flowing into the river, giving the appearance of hundreds of waterfalls. This waterfall is just downstream from the once popular Shasta Springs Resort of the early 1900's. Before automobiles became the main mode of travel in this area, visitors would come by train to relax and play in the sparkling mountain water. The resort closed and fell into decay when the highway was built and bypassed this section of the Sacramento River Canyon.
