"Harbor Seal Pup" by Loree Johnson Photography. Baby harbor seals (Phoca vitulina) are called pups, and they are every bit as adorable as canine puppies. When they are very young, their mothers often leave them on the beach to rest while they go in the water to feed. If you come across a baby seal, please do not get close as it is not weaned yet, and the mother will not come back to nurse if people are near.
