Crater Lake National Park is one of the gems of the national park system. The crater rim is approximately 6200 feet (1890m) above sea level. As a result of the high elevation and proximity to the Pacific Ocean, large amounts of snowfall occur nearly every winter. This image was taken from atop a 10 ft. (3m) bank of snow. Formed in the crater of an ancient volcano, Crater Lake is one of the deepest lakes in the Western Hemisphere. With an average depth of over 1000 ft. (305m) and a maximum depth of nearly 2000 ft. (610m) and no tributaries, the water is extremely clean and clear. This is what makes Crater Lake's water such a deep blue. This image was taken just before sunset on a very calm winter afternoon. The surface of the water has a mirror-like quality reflecting almost perfectly the sky above. This is the western portion of the lake, which includes the ancient cinder cone known as Wizard Island.
Loree Johnson is a nature photographer and passionate advocate for the preservation and restoration of ecosystems and wildlife habitat. She discovered a love for photography late in life at the age of 50 while living in Yreka, California. The desire to travel and document nature induced her to take an early retirement from a tedious desk job and go on the road. During her travels through the Western U.S. for six years (2014-2020) she collected a wealth of rewarding experiences and unique photographs. She volunteered for several National Wildlife Refuges along the way. Loree experiences profound joy in nature, and believes that all people should have the opportunity to experience it, too.
