Description
"Black Canyon of the Gunnison" by Loree Johnson Photography. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park in western Colorado is a steep, narrow canyon carved by the Gunnison River. With nearly vertical cliffs of over 2000 feet (610 m), the chasm is dizzying to behold. This is a view of the narrows, where the canyon is only 40 feet (12 m) wide at the bottom. It is said to have been named The Black Canyon because there are some places in the canyon which only receive 33 minutes of sunlight a day.
